Abstract
The inelastic approximation, applied to simple water-hammer problems, is shown generally to yield lower values of maximum head rise than those given by Allievi’s solution, except when gate closure is rapid. The two approaches agree when the static head in feet is numerically less than 50 times the initial velocity in feet per second and the closure period exceeds the time for 8 pressure cycles.
