Measurement of Ruffled Water Surface Elevation

Abstract
A probe is described for the measurement of the mean level of a ruffled water surface in a laboratory. In principle the instrument is a probe that measures down from a reference datum by counting increments of 0.001 in. until it makes contact with the water surface. The probe is raised and lowered by a crank, driven by a small electric motor that also drives a commutator disc. The signals from this disc are taken to a counter with decade counting tubes. The probe unit is compact and has given trouble-free service.
