Abstract

A method of analysis is described in this paper which has particular reference to the integration of pumped-storage schemes into expanding electric-power systems. The model is based on an interpretation of the transshipment problem, and employs mixed integer programming to determine the minimum cost strategy for future investments, and operating costs. The advantage of this approach is that it explicitly recognizes the system as consisting of a set of interacting subsystems which are coupled in space and time, and operated under a single management unit. It also accounts for the economics of scale associated with the cost of building, and operating, the electric power facilities.
