Abstract
A theory is deveped to predict the formation and deformation of alluvial channels by relating the parameters of the transported substances (fluid and sediment) to those of the channel geometry. Possible channel forms are meandering and braided. Meandering channels are formed if the flow dynamics correspond with the channel morphology. Braided channels occur if flow dynamics and channel morphology are incompatible. Alluvial channels are unstable because the stability criteria for the channel bed and for the channel banks are different.
