Wind Setup Effects in Large Open Channels

Publication: Journal of the Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Division
Volume 106, Issue 3

Abstract

Measurements in a large conveyance canal in California permitted the evaluation of the water surface superelevation (setup due to wind shear in the axial direction of the channel). Through the use of a general equation for the wind shear proposed by the writers, it is shown that the wind setup can be computed closely for various flow conditions, including unsteady states. It is also shown that the wind shear in open channels obeys the same general laws applicable to seaways.
