Shallow Wave Diffraction around Large Cylinder
Publication: Journal of the Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Division
Volume 103, Issue 1
Abstract
The diffraction of cnoidal waves around a large vertical circular cylinder is investigated. First approximations are derived for the velocity potential of the flow field and consequently for the wave loading on the cylinder. The forces may be appreciably larger than predicted on the basis of shallow water sinusoidal wave theory, and the consequences on the design of large offshore structures in shallow water are assessed. The possibility of extending the theory to a second approximation is examined.
