Abstract
The study considers the construction of a sea level canal from the Gulf of Aqaba to the Mediterranean Sea, by means of nuclear explosives. In 1956 a similar proposal was reviewed and rejected for reasons of public safety and economics. The addition of a decade of research has scarcely altered the picture: nuclear excavation is economically competitive but presents seismic hazards. If limited to the construction of a waterway from the port of Elat to the Dead Sea, the project appears feasible. The nuclear excavation of that 120 km route would require about 300 Mt and cost about $210 million for the devices used.
