Abstract
The Port of Churchill is closed to navigation by the passage of frazil and slush ice prior to the general freeze up of its sea approaches. The investigation shows that the navigation season could be extended up to 14 days if ice conditions can be improved. Surveys show that the river temperature reaches its freezing point in advance of the seawater and that the current system in the harbor increases the ice concentration at the wharf. Diversion of the river upstream for power purposes will affect the rate of ice production. Rough calculations indicate that reduction of flow rate will increase the rate of river cooling, but the reduction in velocity will encourage formation of a solid ice cover which will inhibit the frazil ice production.
