Eight-Berth Marine Terminal in Deep Bay Mud
Publication: Journal of the Waterways and Harbors Division
Volume 93, Issue 3
Abstract
Economics dictated a unique construction method for an eight-berth deep-water marine facility which had to be constructed over soft mud up to 135 ft deep. It was necessary to fill over this mud and still dig a ship channel to -40 ft beside this fill. By digging a trench 135 ft deep in the mud and filling it with sand, a dike was formed to retain the fill and support the apron. Provisions for future differential subsidence of up to 6 ft had to be built into the different facilities that were constructed on the 68-acre plot.
