Evaluating Recreational Potential of Small Streams

Publication: Journal of the Urban Planning and Development Division
Volume 98, Issue 1

Abstract

The purpose herein was to find a way to evaluate the recreational potential of small streams and their watersheds in the Central United States. Research was limited to streams with drainage areas of less than 100 sq miles and located within 25 miles of a city. An evaluation methodology was developed and applied in detail to two streams (Boone and Jessamine Creeks) near Lexington, Kentucky. Evaluations were made of the streams’ potential for camping, fishing, picnicking, a trail system, esthetic enjoyment, and the establishment of natural, scenic and historic areas. Conclusions reached were (1) recreational values or their measures can be identified, inventoried and used to evaluate a watershed’s potential for non-utilitarian uses; (2) the methodology yields reasonably accurate evaluations for recreational activities appropriate for small watersheds; and (3) the case studies reveal that many small suburban stream areas may possess medium to high potential for camping, fishing, picnicking, trail system development and some forms of esthetic enjoyment.
