Applications of Extraterrestrial Surveying and Mapping
Publication: Journal of the Surveying and Mapping Division
Volume 98, Issue 2
Abstract
Extraterrestrial surveying and mapping is part of the profession of civil engineering. The ASCE Committee on Extraterrestrial Surveying and Mapping is preparing articles and bibliographies, such as this paper, to aid civil engineers who can use some of the instrumentation and techniques. Geodetic positions with accuracies of 33 ft (10 m) or better can be obtained anywhere with Doppler navigation satellites. Earth resource satellites such as ERTS and Skylab will carry high-resolution television and photographic sensors to image details of the earth surface over large areas. Photogrammetric distortions must be calibrated and removed to prepare photomaps in an accepted map projection such as the UTM. Other extraterrestrial programs are preparing maps of the moon and Mars. All exploration requires maps, and civil engineers can provide important contributions.
