Abstract
A chronological listing of the more important planes of reference that have been used by the United States Government on the Great Lakes in charting operations, dredging, waterway construction, and hydraulic computations are presented. The establishment of the planes, how elevations of these planes above sea-level have been determined, and some of the major problems involved are examined. The history of the development of International Great Lakes Datum (1955), the first international vertical control network to completely cover the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River system is described.
