Abstract
The concept of footsteps of the Surveyor is defined. The usual method of determining positions and locations of lines and corners is through exploratory and accessory surveys. These are aggregated and compiled with other record data; computations are made and analyzed to establish the most satisfactory positions. The theory of proportionate measurement is permissive for analysis, but must be rigidly controlled in use; it fails to distinguish between systematic and random error (the random is not proratable). Sources of records and other data are classified.
