Analysis of Inhomogeneous Elastic Half-Space
Publication: Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division
Volume 99, Issue 3
Abstract
The solutions for various loads applied to homogeneous and inhomogeneous elastic half-spaces have played an important role in the development of foundation engineering, particularly in conjunction with the design of rafts and mats. In the present paper, a finite element computer program was used to solve for the stresses and settlements of a circular load resting on a half-space. The computer results agree quite well with the theoretical answers in those cases for which analytical solutions exist. These results give confidence to the finite element analyses for those cases for which no analytical solutions have been found.
