Abstract
Experiments were conducted in the field and in the laboratory on subsurface soils encountered along the proposed Mt. Baker Tunnel in Seattle, Wash., to determine the modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction, Khl, and the passive failure strength, Qo. The design value of the coefficients of lateral stresses at rest, Ko, is determined on the basis of the new method proposed herein. The field experiments were conducted by the use of horizontal plate bearing tests at various depths in 1.52- to 1.83-m diameter test shafts while the laboratory tests were run in the University of Washington Stress-Meter. There is a reasonable correlation between the field and laboratory values of Khl. However, the correlation between the Qo values obtained in the field and in the laboratory is good. This paper describes the test procedures and the data obtained from laboratory and field tests.
