Incinerator-Residue-Fill Site Investigation

Abstract

The study was conducted over a 3-yr period with main emphasis on chemical composition of the discharge leachate. Borings using the standard penetration test procedure were performed on the in-situ residue at the end of the chemical test period. Selected residue samples were tested for gradation, friction angle and compressibility. In addition, field in-place densities were measured. The results of the chemical study show that two years after placement 80% to 90% of the water soluble ions had been removed from the residue. The physical test results indicate that residue tended to be at its maximum density (standard compaction test) even without controlled placement procedures. The residue had a high angle of internal friction and a moderate amount of compressibility. Residue shows great potential for utilization as a fill in sites where adjustment or re-establishing of grade is desired.
