Abstract

Comparative triaxial and plane strain tests were performed on samples of compacted kaolinite and a compacted silty clay at confining pressures up to 1,500 psi. The stress-strain curves indicated that the plane strain samples were generally more brittle than the triaxial samples. However, both types of samples consolidated under the same major principal stress developed the same final water content and the same peak strength on a total or an effective stress basis.
