Abstract
The foundation for the ALTAIR antenna is a ring beam with a diameter of 118 ft, founded upon coral sand. Loads are applied to the foundation at four points; these points move around the beam as the antenna rotates. Differential motion of the ring beam caused by the moving loads must be less than 0.03 in. The foundation was designed as a beam upon elastic supports, and subgrade modulus was evaluated from laboratory and in situ measurements of wave velocity and by special plate bearing tests. Actual movements of the foundation were measured, and the actual subgrade modulus was backfigured from these measurements and compared with the value used for design.
