Abstract

In the treatment of deformation and stability problems of cohesive soil media, a linear, elastic constitutive behavior is almost exclusively adopted. This is natural as the theory of elasticity has been an effective tool in upgrading a fully empirical approach to a more rigorous level. Consideration of linear, viscoelastic constitutive behavior is the next step in this direction. It is clear that under a given set of boundary stresses or displacements the deviatoric as well as the volumetric response of a cohesive soil medium is not instantaneous but rather time dependent.
