Abstract

The concept of failure of cellular cofferdams by sliding along vertical planes (failure by vertical shear) first received wide public notice in 1944 through Terzaghi's publication of “Stability and Stiffness of Cellular Cofferdams.” (8) As early as 1934, vertical shear had been recognized as a problem by Pennoyer (6), and prior to 1944, a design procedure for evaluating the safety of a cofferdam against vertical shear had been developed by the TV A (9) but had not been widely publicized.
