Testing of Anisotropic Clay Soils

Publication: Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division
Volume 96, Issue 5

Abstract

In general, natural clay deposits are one dimensionally consolidated and acquire cross anisotropic mechanicalproperties. The axis of rotational symmetry is along the direction of consolidation. Presented herein is an attempt to shed some light on what happens when an inclined specimen is tested in compression in a standard triaxial cell. Fig. 1 shows schematically what will be subsequently called a vertical, an inclined, and a horizontal specimen.
