Abstract
One of the most difficult problems encountered in analyses of the stability of structures built on and in rock is the determination of failure criteria for rock masses containing joints, bedding planes, and other geomechanical defects. At the fundamental level little is known about the mechanics of discontinuous and anisotropic rock masses. Analyses of their behavior made in engineering practice are usually based on simplifying assumptions.
