Vibration of Noncircular Foundations
Publication: Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division
Volume 95, Issue 6
Abstract
Evaluation is made of various factors which are not considered in the elastic half-space theory used in the analysis of foundation vibration. From the vibration tests of twenty-two model footings of various shapes, sizes, and weights, it was found that square and rectangular footings behaved differently from circular footings, and that the use of the equivalent radius based on an equal footing area was not valid for noncircular footings. On the basis of correlation between the test results and the theory, the use of a modified equivalent radius, based on an perimeter ratio, is suggested for the analysis of rectangular foundations.
