Abstract
A number of possible mechanisms of secondary compression lead to similar models. A particularly simple model based on rate process theory is proposed for the behavior of the soil skeleton in one-dimensional compression, which is compatible with both Bjerrum’s and Lea and Brawner’s treatments of secondary consolidation. The model is integrated to give the complete solution for continuous primary and secondary consolidation, and the predicted settlement-time and pore pressure-time behavior appear to be in essential agreement with the experiment. The general use of Cα for predicting rates of secondary consolidation is confirmed for one-dimensional field cases.
