Abstract
Model cone and hyperbolic paraboloid footings were tested to observe membrane and bending stresses and to measure soil pressure distributions under the footings. Variations in pressure distribution under shell footings due to soil arching are discussed. Design equations are given for cone and hyperbolic paraboloid footings. A solution is obtained for optimum vertex angle of cone footing to minimize concrete plus reinforcing steel costs. The results are shown as a graph. A second graph facilitates economic comparison of cone and square footings, based upon unit cost ratios of concrete and steel in each footing type.
