New Method of Measuring In-Situ Settlements

Abstract
An inexpensive settlement gage is described. With this instrument it is possible to measure, outside the construction area, the settlements which occur within or below earth dams, fills or buildings with an accuracy of about 0.2 in. Some results from a load test where the new settlement gage has been used are also presented. The measured settlements agreed well with those obtained in a conventional manner with settlement platforms.
