Abstract
Apparatus for measuring the vertical consolidation of soils due to radial drainage under combined pore pressure and voltage gradients is described. An analytical method is outlined which allows use of the test results to predict ultimate consolidation and consolidation rate under the combined action of vertical load and radial electro-osmosis for a vertical drain installation. The method uses radial drainage consolidation tests with and without applied voltage for each soil. An equation for obtaining the cost of that portion of consolidation provided by electro-osmosis is developed. When used without applied voltage, the test provides a simple means of measuring the coefficient of vertical consolidation due to radial drainage, thus obviating the necessity of having to guess this quantity or estimate its value from horizontal permeability measurements, practices to which several vertical drain shear failures have been partially attributed.
