Stability of Atchafalaya Levees
Publication: Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division
Volume 93, Issue 4
Abstract
Designing and constructing stable levees in the Atchafalaya Basin is a problem because the foundation consists of 50 to 100 ft of soft organic clay and medium silty clay. Many reaches of levee which are to have a net height of 20 ft to 25 ft have settled as much as 10 ft to 15 ft. To evaluate settlement and stability problems and the adequacy of levee design procedures, three levee test sections were constructed. The paper describes the design, construction, and instrumentation of these test sections; the pore pressures, settlements, and lateral movements observed; and the data analysis.
