Abstract

Contrary to the popular concept that most of the bedrock under New York City is close to the surface and readily accessible for the support of structures, there are large areas in Manhattan and in the other boroughs where rock is at great depths below grade; and because of the soil and foundation conditions existing in these areas pile support of structures is required.
