Abstract

The coefficient of consolidation of a mixture of two cohesive soils consolidated under a given pressure is expressed mathematically in terms of the coefficients of consolidation of the individual component soils, determined at the same pressure, and the various percentages by weight of these components. Approximately 150 consolidation tests were performed on remolded cohesive soil specimens composed of four reference clay minerals and various combinations of these clay minerals of the Columbia University Clay Mineral Standards Project (API 49). The experimental results are correlated with the mathematical formulation.
