Granulometric Properties of Cement Stabilized Sands

Publication: Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division
Volume 89, Issue 3

Abstract

Triaxial compression tests were performed on compacted sand-portland cement mixtures of a variety of fine and medium sands after 7 days of curing. Suitable relationships were found to exist between the measured cohesive strengths, and the volumetric proportion of sand voids filled with portland cement and the relative surface area of the sands. A three-dimensional graphical model is included whereby the cohesive strengths developed by the tested mixtures can be predicted with a high degree of precision from the volumetric cement-to-voids ratio and the relative surface area of the sands; the mean square model error is 12 psi. Further testing of sands from a wider area should result in the development of satisfactory mixture design charts for sands.
