Abstract

Because of favorable climatic conditions in India and simplicity of construction and operation, engineered waste stabilization ponds are successfully competing with conventional processes of wastewater treatment. An analysis of the reported performance of some ponds is made according to current design concepts and a performance characteristic equation is fitted. It is found that anaerobic reactions dominate in waste stabilization at higher organic loadings. The rate of purification is highest in a single-celled unit or the first cell of a multicelled unit. The rate decreases progressively in subsequent cells of multicelled units.
