Abstract
A mathematical model describing the dissolved oxygen variations in a stratified lake is developed. The model is one-dimensional and includes DO variations with depth and time. The model describes the combined effect of reaeration, photosynthetic oxygenation; vertical mixing and oxygen uptake. A method of calculating hypolimnetic oxygen uptake rates is presented, and the possible role of benthal oxygen uptake is analyzed. A series of model computations using finite-difference methods demonstrates that hypolimnetic oxygen levels within stratified lakes were more sensitive to both vertical mixing and oxygen uptake than to either photosynthetic oxygenation or reaeration.
