Abstract
A mathematical model is used to simulate the development of a thermocline in a relatively quiescent body of water. A sensitivity analysis is performed on the light extinction coefficient and the thermal diffusivity to demonstrate the relative importance of each. Using measurements collected from Pend Oreille Lake in northern Idaho, a simulation is obtained. The Runge Kutta technique used to solve the diffusion type equation indicates the light extinction coefficient to be of primary importance.
