Public Health Service Solid Wastes Program

Publication: Journal of the Sanitary Engineering Division
Volume 95, Issue 2

Abstract

The activities of the Solid Wastes Program of the Public Health Service are conducted under authority of the Solid Waste Disposal Act of 1965. The complex task of solving the problems of solid waste management must be shared by the cities, states, regional authorities, and the Federal government; experience has shown that research and development programs can be undertaken by the Federal government, while comprehensive planning and integrated disposal operations are best conducted by the cities and states with assistance from the other authorities. A systematic approach, applying new technology on a regional basis, appears to be one of the most effective means to solid waste management. Solid Wastes Program demonstration, research, training and state planning grants are presently contributing greatly to the development of this regional approach. The aforementioned projects, plus contract activities, are indicative of the Federal government's willingness to accept its share of the challenge now jeopardizing the health, safety, and natural beauty of our country.
