Abstract

The effects of discharging effluent from a proposed primary treatment plant to the South San Francisco Bay estuary system are evaluated using both the Corps of Engineers' hydraulic model of San Francisco Bay and a specially developed mathematical model. Results obtained from both the hydraulic and mathematical models indicate that the BOD concentration will decrease logarithmically along the deep-water channel in both directions from the point of discharge. Steady-state BOD concentrations over the proposed discharge location were estimated to be 7.0 mg per 1 and 2.0 mg per 1 using the mathematical and hydraulic models respectively. Starting with an initial DO value of 7.6 mg per 1 and using the mathematical model, the steady-state dissolved oxygen concentration directly over the outfall was estimated to be 6.7 mg per 1.
