Validity of Energy Change as a Growth Parameter

Abstract

Growth of bacterial cells has been reported to be proportional to the change in free energy between the substrate and bio-oxidation products. Growth of bacterial cells would be directly proportional to a thermodynamic state function if a general relationship existed and hence would themselves be thermodynamic state functions. Consideration of the parameters involved in bacterial cell growth indicate that a general relationship should not exist. Several examples are given which support this conclusion.
