Abstract

A dispersion conduit is a pipe or flume designed to distribute a fluid almost uniformly throughout its length through outlets consisting of a series of orifices, gates or branch pipes or of one of more longitudinal slots. A uniform distribution of discharge may be approached by means of the distribution principle, that is, by making the outlet head loss large as compared to the maximum difference of available head. The two fundamental concepts of the theory of dispersion conduits, the distribution principle, and the differential equation for decreasing fluid flow along the conduit are examined together with their use in design. The differential equation is derived from momentum considerations.
