Abstract
Natural brine emissions are found to be the principal cause of water quality degradation in the Arkansas and Red River Basins. The methods used to identify the brine emission sources are discussed and the pollution problem is expressed in terms of daily flows of thousands of tons of salt past major cities in the basins. Alternative control solutions considered during the planning studies are discussed and some selected control plans are presented. The value of proposed control works is evaluated in terms of reduced chloride concentrations in major reservoirs. Also presented are proposals for experimental field work needed as a first step leading to final design of control works.
