Encourage Applied Research and Publish the Findings

To fill the increasingly widening gap between academic research and the requirements of practical design, there is an urgent need to step up the so-called applie research in sanitary engineering. This can be best accomplished by engineers practicing in the nonacademic field through the study of their actual installations. To promote the general acceptance of this approach it is desirable that a guiding scheme be provided to illustrate how this type of research can be economically conducted and the mechanism of evaluating and reporting the results. Special programs should be designed to facilitate the reporting and the publishing of these findings. Various means such as special grants and favorable tax treatment, should also be developed to encourage this activity.
