Development of a New Type of Rapid Sand Filter
Publication: Journal of the Sanitary Engineering Division
Volume 92, Issue 1
Abstract
A research program was initiated to design a rapid sand filter for water treatment in which the media would remain of uniform thickness indefinitely and could be cleaned easily under normal operating conditions, thereby permitting increased filtration rates. Tests indicated that the system should be hydraulically controlled by orifices in plates at the top of the filter rather than in the underdrain system. Conventional wash troughs and surface wash equipment are eliminated by such a system. On this basis, a 2-ft square unit or module was developed and operated as a pilot over a 3 yr period. Both the pilot plant and a later full size test model confirmed the earlier findings. Filters consisting of multiple units have been installed and successfully operated at municipal water treatment plants.
