Abstract

Tertiary treatment is becoming necessary to effect greater removal of BOD, solids, and coliform organisms from the effluents of conventional secondary wastewater treatment facilities. In addition, increasing emphasis is being placed on the removal of nitrogen and phosphorous from treated wastewater. These criteria were used to evaluate an aerobic oxidation pond as a tertiary treatment device. Recommendations are made concerning design loadings for tertiary ponds. Better operation devices are suggested to make oxidation ponds more effective as a tertiary treatment device.
