Abstract
An analysis is described for the long-term buckling behavior of reinforced concrete columns using the superposition model for creep analysis. The analysis considers the complete strain history and allows for cracking and age-hardening of concrete. The analysis is nonlinear, providing for yielding of steel and the inelastic response of the concrete at all levels of stress. The shape of the deflected column is determined in the analysis, and is not constrained to any particular geometry. Allowance is made for initial imperfection and eccentricity of loading. The only assumptions made are that full composite action exists between steel and concrete, and a linear strain profile exists for combined axial force and bending. The results of 51 short-term and 16 long-term tests are presented. The analysis gives excellent prediction of short-term load capacities and deflected shapes. A reasonable estimate for life under long-term loads is obtained. A method is given for the accurate estimation of long-term load capacities, which agrees well with the results of tests.
