Abstract
This paper reports an improved balancing technique using continuous strain-gage recording of drive-shaft torque during both opening and closing of bascule bridges. Explicit formulas for correction weight changes are developed. Static measurements are compared with the continuous recording. It is shown that satisfactory measurement can be made by either method, provided that a damped oscillation occurs in the observed torque when the opening is stopped so that the static friction effect is reduced.
