Area-Dependent Processes for Structural Live Loads
Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 107, Issue 5
Abstract
Previously developed live load process models for building loads are generalized to include area dependence for several different occupancies. Several approximations in the process models are investigated through more rigorous expressions. A number of simplifying assumptions employed in deriving lifetime maximum total load statistics are substantiated by simulation of lifetime processes with sustained and extraordinary load components. A multiple extraordinary load model more realistically reflects a variety of unusual loading situations; multiple load occurrence and finite duration are included. Mean lifetime maximum total loads for a few different occupancies are seen to be in general agreement with various model code formulations, and a need for greater data in indicated.
