Effective Width of Girder Web Containing Prestressing Duct
Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 107, Issue 5
Abstract
The effective web width to be used in the shear design of a thin-webbed concrete beam, containing longitudinal prestressing ducts in the web, is examined. Various expressions proposed for the effective web width are reviewed and compared with data from plain concrete prisms loaded in axial compression and from tests on beams which failed in the web crushing mode and which contained a duct in the web. Prism tests do not accurately simulate the behavior of the web in diagonal compression. An effective web width based on data from beam tests is proposed, and a chart for use in computing the shear strength based on web crushing is included.
