Abstract
The results of a combined analysis and design of an AGT (Automated Guideway Transit) system are presented. The system is idealized by one or more rigid mass vehicles supported on linear primary suspension systems traveling at a constant forward velocity over a series of simply supported elevated elastic guideways. Least cost system designs are obtained via mathematical programming by assigning comparative cost factors to individual design parameters such as the vehicle suspension properties, guideway cross sectional dimensions, span length and guideway surface irregularities. System resonances and unusual design features such as soft vehicle suspension and low damping are discussed with underlying reasons particular to vehicles designed to run on flexible guideways.
