Abstract
The development of the classical theory of bridge structure is followed from the beginning of the scientific design of trusses, plate girders and arch bridges based on the work done by scientists in France, Germany, Great Britain, Russia, and the United States. New methods of analysis or the modern theories of bridge structures are next explored using the works of Bendixen, Chalishev, Cross, Bleich, and Cornelius. Finally, the new-old matrix approach with computerized design is briefly mentioned.
