Lumped Parameter Circular Plate Stability Analysis

Abstract

This paper presents a technique for finding the buckling load for a circular plate under very general conditions. The classical circular plate stability problem involves solving a transcendental characteristic equation, including Bessel functions. The in-plane buckling load can be determined analytically for only a few simple plate configurations. A complex plate with varying sectional properties, in-span supports, foundations, or varying in-plane force requires a numerical technique.
