Abstract

The fundamentals of the yield-line method as they apply to the design of reinforced concrete slabs are reviewed and design procedures suitable for routine office use are presented. The advantages and disadvantages of both the equilibrium and energy approaches are examined and recommendations are given as to when each approach should be used. Design examples include both irregular and regular slab systems. For flat slabs consideration is given to flexural yield fans in the vicinity of columns and to exterior panels with or without edge beams. Designs are compared with the ACI 318-71 code requirements for slabs.
